Hitchcock's cameo in Rope seems to be one of the most talked about of all his brief appearances. Rope, as most people know, was an experimental film Hitchcock made in 1948. This was Hitch's first film as producer and he wanted to do something different. He took a simple one act play, which took place in real time, and with some modifications turned it into a film that took place in real time and seemingly without edits.
The entire movie takes place in a single apartment, the only exterior we see is an establishing shot under the credits. It has been incorrectly reported that Hitchcock made his traditional cameo here, but that is not the case. Hitchcock's cameo appears in the form of a neon sign seen through the apartment window. The sign is of the familiar Hitchcock caricature in glowing red. This scene appears approximately 55 minutes into the movie. I'm sorry that the quality of this image isn't better.
